Online-writing-iconBackground

It has been 10 years after a tsunami Aceh. It was one of the deadliest disaster in Indonesian history. We can still remember, how was the devastating tsunami that was happened on 26 December 2004 at 07.58 WIB, an earthquake with magnitude 8,9 SR in Indian Ocean, 66 km west coast of Aceh and followed by a big tsunami with waves up to 12 meters, with the wave speed up to 500-900 km per hour.

Tsunami aceh has destroyed infrastructures, houses and buidings. It has not only ruin the buildings, but it also caused hundred thousand people killed, injured and lost. While, the other hundred thousand people displaced. This is a big tragedy in indonesian history, even this event is not the first tsunami happened in Indonesia. Before tsunami aceh, there was a tsunami happened in 1861 and 1907. But before tsunami aceh 2004, we don’t aware with  the importance of disaster management.

Tsunami aceh in 2004 was the tsunami with the longest ruptured in the world history. The length of ruptured under sea which being a source of earthquake and tsunami is about 1600 km. Hiro Kanamori et al. In their paper with the title “Historical seismograms for unraveling a mysterious earthquake: The 1907 Sumatra Earthquake”, did not mention the length of ruptured, but they wrote the similarity between tsunami 1907 and tsunami Nias 2005 and earthquake on November 2002.  But because the limitation of the equipment, so the length of the ruptured was not clear. Based on that similarity can be concluded that the lenght of ruptured tsunami Nias in 2005 is shorter than ruptured in tsunami Aceh 2004 (Hiro Kanamori et al. 2004).

After a big tsunami 2004, we finally aware that disaster management is very from tsunami Aceh, what elements has done good and what element needs an improvement, so we are well prepared if it happen again in the future.

Faculty of medicine UGM and RS Sardjito has helped Aceh in Tsunami 2004 for 4 years and published a book about its experinced in helping aceh with the title “ 3 Years Activities of Sardjito Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty o Psychology UGM in Aceh”. Based in its experinced, the center for health policy and management, especially disaster management division and working gruop on disaster management faculty of medicine UGM will organize international seminar/workshop to commemorate the tsunami aceh 2004 and disaster management journey that has been conducted over 10 years.
